Interviews are conversations where questions are asked and answers are given, usually held by a company representative (interviewer), inviting the candidate for employment (interviewee) to a scheduled meeting to discuss whether the interviewee is suitable for the position available.
Interview’s vary, depending on the position; institution or business of which they are applying for. Depending on the variables mentioned, interviews can also contain many rounds with different company representatives; Preparation is key.

The noun etiquette describes the requirements of behaviours according to the conventions of society, practices such as:
- Phone manners
- Social situations
- Professionalism
- Punctuality
Different types of interview call for different mannerisms, such as being formal and informal. It is smart to proceed with a formal attitude, as the interview unfolds you will get a feel of the mood and adjust.
As a general rule of thumb, one should always dress in smart attire when being interviewed; It shows willing and is polite to do so. On the other hand, if a company has a reputation of being relaxed or if one is asked to do so, informal attire is acceptable.
When attending an interview, it is important to prove your very best credentials. It is crucial and good practice to always obtain clean copies of your resume. On the other hand, when proving yourself within a certain industry such as the creative and digital industry. It is just as important to produce a portfolio, weather this be digital or physical. This will indicate good organisational skills and also provide an insight on workflow and previous pieces of high-quality work. Providing an insight on these areas is a secret weapon than anyone can bring to an interview to stand out.
Telephone interview
Employers use telephone interviews to cut costs and time to whittle down candidates in the first round of the interview process; considering it maybe a component of a large interview process. This is a good way for employers to gain an understanding and gain an insight into the persons verbal communication.
Face to face interview
Smaller companies tend to make use of face to face interviews, often consisting of a hierarchy of the company asking questions E.g. The boss. Whilst keeping it professional you can build a friendly rapport with the interviewee; this person Is most likely the person whom will be deciding if ‘you’re hired’ or ‘fired’.
Video interviews
Considering the ever-growing popularity of skype and other methods (find word) the video interview is inevitably becoming more popular. The interview can take place from the comfort of your new home or candidates can be invited into an office. On occasions video interviews will be held by agencies, consisting of questions set by the employer.
Panel interview
Panel interviews can be a daunting challenge. It is crucial one applies a lot of preparation, prior to this style of interview. If one has carried out enough research on the company, one will possess a greater insight into whom they are presenting too. However, the interviewee should treat all panel members with equal etiquette because every panel member will have contribution to one’s final overview, this style of interview makes it hard to build a solid connection with the individual decision makers.
The sequential interview
Sequential interviews consist of multiple interviews; maybe held by numerous people. Each interview is designed to extract a different element from the candidate. E.g. the first interview will discover more information about the candidate’s background and general information and the second interview will explore how the candidate will approach challenging situations and how they can contribute.
Lunch and dinner interview
Employers turn to lunch and dinner interviews to explore how candidates handle themselves in social situations, the employer can gain an insight on the candidate’s etiquette. Allowing the employer to gain an insight on social capabilities and etiquette shows how you have a rounded personality.
Theoretically speaking, interviews come in all shapes and sizes. The interview types mentioned are just a few of many. However, most of which are practiced by the majority organizations. Interviews are important for both sides of the party, so it is important to always be comfortable in an interview situation. Allowing for a honest transparent conversation which paves way for a long-term association.
